Team USA suffered a major blow on Sunday at the 2023 World Baseball Classic.

Mexico started the game swinging. Joey Meneses blasted a two-run homer off starter Nick Martinez to start the first inning.
America rose to second after Tim Anderson singled home Kyle Tucker, but it went from bad to worse from there.
Up 4–1 in the top of the fourth, Meneses launched a three-run homer, his second of the game, to extend the lead to 7–1.
The US didn’t score again until the bottom of the seventh on a Will Smith homer, but Mexico just kept going.
Mexico added four runs in the top of the eighth to make it 11–2, with Randy Arrozarena, Rowdy Téllez and Alan Trejo all hitting RBI singles.
The USA responded with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, as Bobby Witt Jr. and Anderson hit RBI singles, both via doubles. He had a chance to hit a miraculous six in the bottom of the ninth, but Mexico quickly shut down any hope of sealing the victory.
Team USA will play Canada next Monday at 10 p.m. ET at Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. In their first game of the tournament, Canada defeated Great Britain 18–8.
