History was made in the NHL on Tuesday night. It was not a landmark goal or a defining victory, but the first live hockey game of its kind to be animated in real-time and broadcast nationally.
ESPN recreated Tuesday’s game between the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden in the style of the Disney animated series “Big City Greens” in an effort to attract younger viewers and increase the league’s national audience.
Both goalkeepers were replaced by Gramma Ellis and Bill on the broadcast, while Cricket Green and Tillie Green stepped in for one player on each team. MSG’s iconic ice surface was replaced with a sheet in the “Times Circle” of the Big City Greens, and an animated chicken was preferred over human referees.
