A year after the seven-acclaimed season finale of the Emmy-nominated Netflix series aired, the screen giants are still attached at the hip. He made Tomlin a “blood pact” in a new interview with Yahoo Entertainment.
“We saw one of those horrifying adventure things on TV that’s just apocalyptic and people just break their hands,” says Tomlin, 83. “Of course, we didn’t cut any [in our hands] Because we didn’t want the mark. So we just wound up under-appreciating ourselves. That’s how we made our pact. (Fonda became unavailable for the morning of our interview.)
Of course, Tomlin and Fonda, 85, go back much further than grace and frankie, They first co-starred in the beloved 1980 Office Space comedy 9 to 5 – who like moving oninvolving women taking revenge on the man who wronged them, and associating them with Dolly Parton.
“Now it seems like we’re two old shoes, but here’s what happened,” Tomlin begins. “Jane was so innocent, so young, she still is, she’s just in her clothes. And she’d say, ‘Come on Lily, you have to take a leap of faith.’ She was trying to film me. And I was always shy about doing comedy because I used to say, ‘Well, they’ll see me, they’ll think I’m going to be a funny person. And being funny is very hard.’
“So I was kind of vacillating. And she’d say, ‘You have to take a leap of faith.’ She’ll just emphasize that. So she’s always been that ‘leap of faith’ girl for me. I just loved her innocence and everyone needed her to be okay with it and do the right thing. And god Thankful that I did the film. It was a blessing.
In 2018, Parton announced plans to form a 9 to 5 Sequel with the original cast and co-written by Rashida Jones and Pat Resnick. However, the follow-up was effectively canceled in 2019. Fonda recently said He was dissatisfied with the script.
Tomlin is still hopeful that will happen.
”I haven’t given up on it,” she says, looking for a new writer. “I’m still holding out hope that we’ll get a script together that the three of us would like to do ’cause it would be amazing … Maybe it’ll be our last movie, hooray.”
