Martz expects Darnold to start in 49ers' NFL-best offense originally appeared nbc sports birea
The 49ers' offense is loaded with explosive, dynamic playmakers. There is no doubt that San Francisco has one of, if not the best group of skill position players in the nfl.
However, questions still remain over the most important position in all of professional sports, the quarterback.
Former NFL head coach Mike Martz, who won a Super Bowl in 1999 as an offensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams, previews his top 5 offenses for the 2023 season Column for “33rd Team” and awarded the top spot to San Francisco despite the uncertainty at quarterback.
“The San Francisco 49ers ranked fifth in total offense last season, and they started three quarterbacks, including the last player selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, Brock Purdy,” writes Martz. The fact that those quarterbacks played at a high level when two of them, Trey Lance and Purdy, had little or no NFL experience. This offseason, they signed veteran Sam Darnold to help them move to the top of the league. Can.”
Martz considers newly-signed Veteran quarterback Sam Darnold Will eventually start for the 49ers and that behind-the-curve play calling of coach Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco's highly talented roster will allow the 25-year-old to flourish.
“The 49ers will be the top offense because they are one step ahead of everyone else,” Martz continues. “Even without a star quarterback last season, he scored a lot of points (26.5 per game, sixth most). I like what Shanahan does and how he approaches the quarterback position.”

The 49ers kept up their production on offense last season with multiple quarterbacks, certainly a testament to the level of talent on the roster and Shanahan's scheme.
It remains to be seen who will start at quarterback for San Francisco in Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but whether it's Darnold, Lance or Purdy, the 49ers should have one of the league's best offenses.
